That was designed for us originally by Dvorak Riemersma, back about seven or eight years ago in preparation for our 50th anniversary as a congregation, and it captures what it is that we believe God is calling us to be as a community. The slogan that you see there is "Maranatha, a place to belong." The logo itself represents the waters of chaos and God's redemptive purposes in Christ. The rising of the sun represents not only a new day, but it also represents God the Father. The cross, of course, represents the person of Jesus Christ, who by his death, resurrection, and ascension has made new life possible, and the devil represents the Holy Spirit, who originally hovered over the waters of chaos when God spoke new life into being and who hovers over a broken creation today, bringing new life, new birth, and new spring. Maranatha, a place to belong, when the Lord first gave us that slogan, those of you that were with us in the old building may remember, we had a big poster made up and we hung it on one of the front walls of the church, some of you will remember it. And what I remember most about it is the diverse reactions that we received when that logo first went up. There were all kinds of people who thought it was pretty neat, that it really gave voice, if not necessarily to where we find ourselves at any given moment, at least the ideal that it represents, Maranatha, a place to belong. But there were also other reactions, strong reactions, visceral reactions, deep from the gut, reactions that said, "I don't like this. This isn't true to my experience. I don't feel like I belong." As I've pondered about that over the subsequent years, I've come to the conclusion that the slogan Maranatha, a place to belong, at one and the same time gives voice for many people, both our deepest longings and at the same time also our deepest fears. Because what is our deepest longing? But to belong, a place to call home, relationships whereby we feel safe, cherished, looked after, where we are known, where we're understood, where we're celebrated, we're appreciated, and we can rest in safety under the umbrella of somebody who's bigger than we are. At the same time, that generates huge fears, because what if I don't belong? What if I can't figure out the rules that bind a community together? What about if I'm found to be wanting? What if, at the end of the day, I get sent away? You see, the more you're in touch with your longing in that place, the greater becomes the fear. And I was reminded powerfully of that last Sunday night when Juliet shared some of her story in connection with Dave's message. Juliet, as many of you know, is on staff here. She's director of restoration ministries. And last Sunday night, Dave was speaking on the function of delegated authority in God's kingdom as an umbrella that keeps us safe, runs interference for us. It makes it possible for us to belong. And as part of that message, he had Juliet share some of her journey. And as part of her journey, she told a story about her Jolly Roger. Her Jolly Roger, for those of you not in the know, was that big old green Oldsmobile that she used to tootle around with. If you've ever looked into the Jolly Roger in its heyday, then you will have known that it was filled with stuff, like really filled with stuff. The backseat was typically unusable. So every so often, I'd be hitching a ride with her, and I'd take one look at that. And as her boss and as her mentor, I thought I had the right to speak into that a little bit. And I'd say, "Juliet, you know, this doesn't look good. You really need to clean up your car." And she'd spot her a little bit, and yeah. And she'd make sort of a half-hearted attempt at cleaning it up. But mostly, she would just cover it up with a blanket. Hear no evil, see no evil. So one day, I got a little bit exasperated with her, and I turned to her, and I said, "Listen, why don't you at least put all that stuff in your trunk?" That's what trunks are for. And she looked at me with these big eyes, and she said rather sheepishly, "My trunks already fall." And it wasn't until much, much later that she shared with me why her car was always packed. Because, you see, throughout most of her growing up years, she had issues with belonging. And time and time again, when she would sort of exhale and feel like, "I am now at home," something would happen. The rug would get pulled out from underneath her. She'd get blamed for something that she had, you know, no responsibility for in most instances. And things would happen that she could never see coming. And she'd be forced to move from where she was to the next place, and that happened repeatedly, time and time again. And so when she came here to this community ten years ago, she came looking for a home. The Lord met her here marvelously. She gave us her heart. But in the back of her mind was always the fear. Will it last? Will there come a time when somebody pulls out the rug from underneath me? Am I going to get sent away when I least expect it? And so why was her car always packed? Her car was always packed so that when it happened, as she was afraid it might, she wouldn't have to go home to pack her stuff. She could just go get her son, put him in the car, and take off for destinations unknown. Well, you say that's pretty irrational, isn't it? Perhaps. But you know just as well as I do that we all have those irrational places, don't we? Those places where our fears intersect with our longings. Those places where we are afraid the shoe is going to drop. Those places where we wonder, is there some hidden code to life in community that I haven't quite figured out? Is there some secret to doing relationships that I'm blind to? When people really find out what is truly in my heart, will they find me acceptable? How long can I keep on putting on a face? Will they truly love me for who I really am? You know what I'm talking about? There isn't anybody that has by times not felt those kinds of feelings. And I found it rather interesting this past week, quite unrelated, as I continued to read the Papa Prayer by Larry Crabb in my personal devotions. He nailed it perfectly. He's talking here about the differences between men and women. And he says, "A man's fear is this. Am I adequate? Do I have the way to handle important tasks, to impact a woman, a child, a friend in a way that affirms my value? The flip side of desire is terror. The coin has two sides. I want what I cannot stop wanting. Is what I want so desperately eternal value, the way to make an impact that lasts beyond the grave, mine to enjoy? Man's deepest terror is weightlessness, the absence of solid substance that others recognize and appreciate." He says, "Nothing terrifies a man more than to think his life amounts to nothing more than a hand dipped into water and then withdrawn with no evidence that it was ever there." Women, he says, are not men. Men are not women. The differences are beyond physiology and anatomy, beyond hairstyle and clothing and pitch of voice and the way each throws a ball or moves on a dance floor. The core difference, he says, lies in desire. Men long for weightiness for the substance that impacts, but he says, women yearn for beauty, for an internal reality that makes eternal impact by drawing others to cherish and honor and protect what they see by awakening another their desires for ultimate beauty. He says, "Nothing terrifies a woman more than to feel there is nothing unique about her being that another could esteem or treasure." And so a woman's fear is this. Am I beautiful or am I merely useful, a sexual object, a resource that functions well to achieve another's purpose? And the flip side of desire is terror. Can I connect deeply with anyone? Is anyone safe? Will anyone see my beauty or is there nothing to see that others will honor or enjoy? He goes on to point out that more often than not, those deep desires are so painful, we're so out of touch with our own desires that we push them aside. It's only periodically when the Holy Spirit gets through to those places that we truly get to be in touch with our longings. The more we are in touch with our longings, the greater is the terror, the greater is the fear. And there is no greater longing than to belong. It's foundational to life. And so there is no greater terror than to discover that I'm really not wanted. I really don't belong. So what is the antidote to this struggle of belonging and the fear that goes with it? A longing, I'll tell you, that lies very close to the heart of this community and a terror that lies very close to the heart of this community and defines a lot of what happens or doesn't happen around here. I happen to be convinced that the Lord God is very busy digging out these places and that he is teaching us to find our life and our hope in him. How do we do it? Well, it begins, interestingly enough, by facing our greatest fear, which is to devote ourselves, as did the early church, not only to the apostles' teaching, but also to the fellowship. We need to devote ourselves to Christian biblical community. Now, the fellowship here is not only the church universal, but it's especially the local church because in God's wisdom he has, in the words of John Calvin, made the church to be our mother and the place where God wants people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, by faith in Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, to find a foretaste of their eternal home when in God's presence we will truly be fully known, we will truly be fully loved, we will be truly, fully celebrated, and we will truly, fully, forever belong. But now in order for this to work out and for this to be real in practice and not just theory, there are four things that you and I have a responsibility to do to make it happen. In the time that we have this morning, I'm going to try to touch on the first two of those and then, Lord willing, in a couple of weeks we'll come back to the other two. First of all, if we want to devote ourselves to biblical community, the first thing that we need to do, and this may sound strange to you, is we need to understand and accept the gospel message. Here's how Paul puts it, 1 Timothy 1.15, "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance, Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst." See, if truth be known, we're all homeless. Some of us hide it better than others, some of us cover it up better than others, but we're all the offspring of Adam and Eve, and Adam and Eve, you will recall, were created to live in the garden, and the garden was a place of home, a place where they belonged to God, a place where they belonged to each other, a place where in their nakedness there was no shame, they could be truly themselves, do life from the core of their being, and they didn't have to worry about being rejected, did they? Until at the behest of the serpent, they bought the lie that somehow they could have their cake and eat it too, that somehow they could escape from under the umbrella of God's protective care, they could be independent to do what they wanted to do, and they could still be at home while they miscalculated badly. They got kicked out of the garden. And from that day to this, every last one of us, we have those places where our longings are unfulfilled, those places where, oh, we just so desperately want to be secure, those places where we so desperately want life to be together, and we turn to every imaginable idol to fill those places. Sometimes it's a relationship, sometimes it's money, sometimes it's the television, sometimes it's getting lost in a novel, sometimes it's hoping against hope that I will have the kind of friendship that will keep me going, but at the end of the day, nobody can quite get down there, because you see, it's too deep, and it's too broken. So what did God do? Well, you know the answer, he so loved the world that he what? He gave his only begotten son, he was forsaken, that we might never be forsaken by him. And when we own our emptiness, when we know there isn't anybody else that is responsible for filling it, even if they could, when we bow before the Lord God, acknowledge our sinfulness, we turn to Jesus and we embrace his sacrifice and his resurrection on our behalf, our sins are forgiven, we are reconciled to God, God gives us the Holy Spirit, he is a spirit of sonship, he bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and we discover maybe for the first time in our lives, if we know how to do it right, we discover for the first time in our lives that I am loved unconditionally, that no matter how many times I screw up, there is forgiveness and there is a new beginning, there is somebody bigger than I who believes in me that by his grace, I will get to where I need to go, because I am chosen and called to belong to God. And out of that place then, comes a confidence and an ability to be myself, out of that place comes the skills, the ability to do relationship, to know how life and community works, to know what my place is and what my values are, scripture puts it this way, and I love this passage of scripture in the book of Isaiah, "No longer will they call you deserted, God says to Israel, or name your land desolate, but you will be called Hepsaba and your land Bula, for the Lord will take delight in you and your land will be married." There's a play on words there that doesn't come through very clearly in the English, but the word Hepsaba there means delight, and the word Bula means married. And the picture there, oh what a picture it is, the picture there is that of an abandoned bride or an orphan child, somebody that is at the mercy of powers greater and more wicked than it can imagine, has no hope and it has no future, and God comes along, and you'll find that imagery in the Old Testament, God comes along and he picks up the orphan, he picks up the broken, rejected bride, he wraps his arms around her and he says, "You're mine and you're married to me and since I'm bigger than anybody else in all the universe, I'm going to look after you and I'm going to love you and I'm going to cherish you." Now here's the problem, most of us we understand this to one degree or another intellectually, don't we? The problem is to understand it in the deep heart places. Juliet and her jolly Roger, she could have told you all the theology, in fact has a long history of meeting God in those kind of places and yet those deep inner core places of our heart are incredibly resistant to receiving grace. And the reason for that is that where those places are broken, we have never learned trust and because we have never learned trust, we don't know how to make that connection with God out of those spots. It won't take very long to talk about this, but let me show you just very quickly how trust is formed and this is taken from my book, Blessings and Curses, those of you that have the book might want to reread that chapter. How does a child bond to its mother? Basic trust in a child's life is learned what? In the first 18 months, in the first 18 months that kid either bonds with the mother or does not and the process works like this, the child has a need, pants is dirty, stomach is hungry, is afraid, the response is always rage, baby cries, baby is uncomfortable, baby doesn't like what is happening. So in a good relationship what happens is the caregiver gives input to satisfy that rage and so you make eye contact, you pick up the child, you know how you put the kid on your shoulder and you walk around until he or she gets settled, you smile at the baby and of course you feed the kid or you change its pants. Out of that the child experiences relief and out of that relief it learns a thing called basic trust, that is to say it now knows that there is somebody bigger than itself and I'm going to be looked after, I will be loved and I'll be okay. You know as well as I do we live in a world that is imperfect and there isn't a parent in this place let alone out of the rest of the world that does this job 100% perfectly all the time. In fact what happens in other situations is that those needs are not met at all, here again you have the need, child has rage and now the caregiver instead of moving towards the child silences the child, ignores the child, neglects the child, abuses the child, rages at the child. That's what lesson child learns, child is silenced, there is no sense in speaking out, my needs don't matter, my voice is stilled, I don't get heard, why bother? The result is the child develops a thing called mistrust and when you have basic mistrust in life you have a hard time doing relationships, you have a broken spot in you that nobody can ever fix and you can receive all the love in the world and you can feel that you belong to one degree or another but you know just as well as I do if you run into people like that you can love them a thousand times over, the first time you fail what happens? At the window you go, the relationship doesn't matter because you have just reinforced that ancient injury deep on the inside and a lot of times you know when we encounter people like that we begin to understand why relationships fall apart, why people cannot be part of community because the skills that are needed to do the dance that life is, is totally missing and there is always such a distrust in those places that what happens is that we become our own parents, there is nobody bigger than me, I am the measuring stick of my own life and you get a whole flood of the demonic that comes rushing in that whispers to you all the time reinforcing your deepest fear, I told you nobody would understand you, I told you that you have no voice, I told you nobody really loves you, I told you everybody is out to do you in, other people look at that, they say it is completely irrational, it doesn't make any sense, it helps you not at all when you are in that spot because all you know is the reality of what you know, anybody here know what I am talking about? Here is the good news, when we come to Christ and he gives us the Holy Spirit if we will let him walk into those places and take responsibility when we can instead of pointing fingers at everybody else guess what happens, God gives us a revelation in those deep places because only God can reach into that spot and make us new from the inside out, I love this verse out of the book of Ezekiel, it is one of God's promises, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you, I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh, I would have never believed how difficult this process would be but I stand here before you today more convinced than ever that God is bigger than all of that and I got to tell you that for the first time in many years of ministry we see God getting down to those very deep core places of people's hearts, he is giving a revelation of himself that is just totally and completely transforming lives, that is our message and ministry to the nations of the world because the world is full of those who are homeless, last Sunday morning in this place and I don't know if I am supposed to tell you this story but there was a young man that was kicked out of his home out in the Toronto area, found out later camped all week under the trees beside the church here, came to the service last Sunday morning, heard God speak powerfully into his life, was present at the Maranatha Youth Film Festival Wednesday I remember seeing his picture on the video, the world is full of orphans, the world is full of the lost and you and I we have the answer if we will but believe God's truth and stand on it, we need to understand the gospel and accept it at heart places not only that and this may really sound strange to you but we need to commit ourselves to the local church, we need to commit ourselves to the local church, the book of Hebrews puts it this way, let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the day approaching or drawing near I believe the biblical ideal and it is an ideal is that all the believers in a given community ought to really be one worshipping body I believe that's the thrust of Jesus' high priestly prayer in John chapter 17 when he says father keep them by your power and may they be one even as we are one well you know just as well as I do that the tragic history of God's people is that they have not maintained the unity of the spirit we have divided into any number of fragmentations and different denominations I did a little research this other week anybody want to take a guess how many Christian denominations there are worldwide 38,000 North America alone probably 1,500 to 2,000 and of course even in Belva we have probably 20 or 25 or maybe even more different denominations represented you can appreciate that dolls are Christian witness particularly because while some divisions are good divisions based on the truth of the gospel many divisions are based on personality personal preference and all kinds of other crud and an unwillingness to humble ourselves in the context of the community of believers but there's one upside and that is even as individual Christians with their own unique anointing of God's Holy Spirit are able to be a unique reflection of the character of God so different denominations and different congregations each in their own place can be a unique reflection of God's character a reflection determined by their calling a reflection determined by the people whom he brings together a reflection that is determined by the vision the passion the longing that he places in that community's heart so take our own congregation for a moment you all know what our vision statement is to be a biblically functioning community through which God's redemptive purposes for the world is realized the community in love with God and love with each other filled with God's power not just preoccupied with ourselves and with our own need but ready to lend a hand to those who are lost in lonely out of that comes their mission statement of course and their mission statement is as you know to reach the lost to restore the broken to equip the saints to release the workers there is a dynamic progression you're born into the family of God you take a lot of time need and attention at the early stages you grow up and as we'll see later on you move from a consumer to be becoming a producer now in generalities that vision and that mission statement belongs to most Christian churches because we all share a common generic calling but you know as well as I do that in our particular congregation it has a particular flavor that flavor is determined in part by my leadership my calling my passion it's determined in part by who you are who God has sovereignly brought together and it surfaces in the unique action of God that God has been doing and I trust will continue to do in this particular community and so God builds his church the glory of God as Saint Aranea said many years ago is mankind to men and women fully alive I could elaborate on that I won't now but to commit yourself to the local church is the first of all ask the question what church community is God sovereignly calling me to be part of where has he placed me sovereignly what are my passions what are my longings and if the answer to that is that you feel God has called you to be part of this community then one of God's provisions to help us to grow into learning the skills to do life and to do relationship is to submit ourselves to one another it's to submit not only to the vision and the mission of the church but it's also to know that God raises the church up as a family whereby we can speak into each other's lives and help us grow up into all things that are in Christ here's how the writer to Hebrew puts it in a verse that you've heard before obey your leaders submit to their authority they keep watch over you as men we could add women who was given account obey them so that their work will be a joy not a burden for that will be of no advantage to you see it's like family here's the reality let me be very upfront with you about this a lot of people want to be part of community they want all the blessings and the benefits of community but they don't ever want to submit to the authority of community that's like a kid living at home he wants you to feed him he wants you to do his laundry he wants you to provide pocket money for him but he doesn't ever want to do what you're telling him to do some of you say that's just like my teenager well you know how frustrating that is and while it's true that the child has to grow up and learn his own way God places parents in the life of a child to help a child grow up and walk in the ways of God I'll never forget years ago we had a man in our church I'll call his name Simon that's not his real name but he was one of these anti type people nothing was ever good enough and he was always critical of everything that was going on in the church and I don't remember what the cause or the reason was but one day I was visiting him he was in his greenhouse and he was tomato grower and he had these beautiful tomato plants that were growing on a string and he was picking out the suckers so that it would grow tall and straight and not waste its energy on suckers and he was going on and on about this that of the other thing and I had it on the tip of my tongue to say but I meantfully restrained myself I had it on the tip of my tongue to say Simon you know why these tomato plants are bearing such good fruit they are submitting themselves to your leadership and to your direction and they grow up because they're allowing you to nurture them and I would have said Simon if you would do the same if you would get over your attitude and you'd allow other people to speak into your life not only would you grow up in Christ to be what you need to do but your life would bear good fruit instead of the bad fruit that it's currently yielding I don't know where you find yourself this morning you see allowing somebody else into those places is counterintuitive it's counterintuitive to North American culture it is especially difficult in those places where our trust has been destroyed and where we don't know whom we can trust and if you find yourself in that kind of a situation you need to pray about that you need to bring those issues out in the open and you need to say Lord if this is the church community that you're calling me to be part of then help me to trust that through the people that you have placed in this community you're going to help me to grow up and become what you want me to be for the glory of God I've often said to kids the worst of the worst parents sometimes not always but sometimes are better than no parents at all let me end this morning by telling you the rest of Juliet's story as she shared it last Sunday night how did the Lord fix this deep fear in her heart this desire to get in her car and go and never come back well he was ruthless the first thing that happened this coming November two years ago she got seriously ill her whole body shut down didn't matter what the doctors said or did nothing worked blood counts that should have been up at 300 were down to three another count that should have been between a hundred and seventy and two hundred and sixty five were down to seven doctors couldn't operate because they didn't think her body could take it they pumped her full of medication and treatment trying to build up her blood supply nothing worked the medication more often than not had very adverse effects and made her very ill until a year later at the end of that she didn't know where to turn and she did what scripture said to do she called the elders three of them asked them to pray for her but also shared with them that deep fear a feeling that one day the shoe is going to drop I'm not going to be loved I'm not going to be accepted I can't be myself and somebody is going to send me away and as she relates to story she cried like a girl and you have to know her history to know the significance of that she cried like a girl and the men all men interestingly enough prayed for her and prayed for God not only to heal her body but to minister to that deep spot and the elders here will testify to the truth of this just like that God began to hear that prayer that was in November of last year by December the new round of treatments that she underwent began to take effect her blood count doubled doubled again and doubled again all within the space of one month by the end of January things were back to where they needed to be she let out a sigh of relief and she came to grips with the fact that if God placed her in this community and she had to face the fear of being sent away and she unloaded the Jolly Roger let me read you these are her own words she did an inventory of what came out of that backseat of the Jolly Roger this isn't even the trunk two boxes of her novel in spite of all the damage 17 books written by other authors 21 tubes of lip gloss six maps canned food in abundance her son's ball hockey gear 40 of her favorite CDs enough clothing to last a week for both her and for her son 12 and a half pair of shoes a parrot on a stick a folder containing her resume and a letter to the church council explaining that she had gone off to do missions so that council would never have to face the shame of explaining why she was such a screw up her journals and then James's baby pictures the story goes on February 2009 it is now she has boxes sitting around that have never been unpacked since she first moved into this area in 1995 why the less you unpack the less you have to pack up if you got to go April 2009 God gave her the opportunity to buy a house 20 years to the day that she ran away from home she and her son moved into their own house and then if some of you know June 2009 out of God knows where how long comes a man his name Ian I think Ian's here somewhere are you here Ian Ian's been nervous about this all week he's hiding up in the production suite so that we can't put him on the big screen and I don't want to tell them are you what's going to happen in this relationship but I think it's going places you see tears may tarry for the night but joy comes in the morning and I tell you that story not to single her out or to elevate her above anybody else but to show you that God is at work in the deep places and what he is asking the rest of us to walk through he starts in those of us who have primary leadership responsibility so that nobody can ever say to us you don't know what we're talking about you don't know what my pain is we've been there and God has proven faithful and our challenge and our message as a community together is to be that kind of place so that people from every tribe tongue and nation can find a home with God and with us I know about you but it's what I live for and I hope you do too. , I am your, surrendered holy to you, you send me in your family,
