Here is the word of the Lord from Colossians chapter 1 concerning the person of Jesus Christ. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities. All things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning and the firstborn from the dead, so that in everything He might have supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood shed on the cross. Verse 17 in particular is our emphasis this morning. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Well, as most of you know by now, I'm a little bit of a science buff in my spare time. And one of the things that I've been rather intrigued by of late is what is commonly known in the field of particle physics as the unified field theory. And the unified field theory holds that all four major attractional forces that keep the universe together have one underlying mechanism that unites them. I know you're already excited about it, but let me give you a little science lesson. Indulge me for just these few moments as I walk you through what these four attractional forces are. We all experience them on a constant basis. And if you're looking for a spiritual lesson, trust me, there's one at the end of this. So bear with me. The first major attractional force that exists in the universe is known as the strong nuclear force. And the strong nuclear force is what binds together quarks into neutrons and protons and also keeps neutrons and protons together. Now, if you went to school when I did, then you will have learned that basic matter consists of electrons and protons and neutrons. They make up the atom. Well, since then, scientists have discovered a whole lot more, and they discovered that protons and neutrons, in turn, are made up of things called quarks. Don't ask me what they are. They have funny names. There's a charmed quark, there's an up quark, and there's a down quark, and it sounds like quite a chaos to me. But all of these are held together by another little critter called a gluon. And a gluon runs back and forth like crazy, trying to keep these things tuned together so the universe doesn't blow up. And just to show you the amount of power that is exerted by these gluons in keeping it together, when you have a nuclear explosion, what happens is that the attractional force that keeps the protons together and the neutrons together is overcome. And according to Einstein's famous theory of E=mc2, you have a nuclear explosion whereby a portion of the matter turns into energy. That's the strong nuclear force. It's incredibly powerful. And that is followed, then, by the electromagnetic force, and that's one that most of us are familiar with. It causes opposites to attract electrically, and so it attracts electrons and protons together, forms them into atoms, and makes it possible for atoms to form molecules and thus give structure to nature. Now electrons, protons, and molecules and atoms are all bound together by a little particle called a photon. And again, it's the photon who transfers the energy from one to the other that keeps all of this from flying apart or from flying into each other. Well, then, there is what is known as the weak magnetic or the weak nuclear force, and that is a repulsive short-range interaction responsible for radioactivity. And it holds electrons, quarks, and neutrinos together, and it does that by some very strange particles known as WNZ bosons. I know it's all pretty lofty, but you just wait till we get to where we're going with this. And then, of course, there is the one force that all of us recognize all the time, especially when you step on the scales in the morning, and that is the force of gravity. And gravity or gravitational force, and the words are sometimes used interchangeably, but there are nuances that only particle physicists can appreciate. Gravity is the long-range interaction on all particles with mass. And here's where it gets really interesting, because scientists posit that the agency of gravity is an elusive particle tentatively named the graviton. That is to say, there is speculation that the force of gravity, which we all experience and which holds the whole universe together, is posited by an as yet undiscovered particle called a graviton. Now, here's what's been happening in the world of particle physics. The first three, the strong nuclear force, the electromagnetic, and the weak magnetic, or the weak nuclear interaction, can all be explained in terms of a common formula. They are all variants of the same force, and that can be understood and explained scientifically. Gravity, with a graviton as yet undiscovered, does not fit into that category. And for many, many years now, many, many scientists, who are a lot smarter than any of us here, have been hard at work trying to figure out how those four forces should be tying together. And Albert Einstein spent the last 20 years of his life looking for this. And this big CERN particle accelerator built on the border between, I think, France and Switzerland, this huge particle accelerator that has 10,000 scientists engaged in this project. One of their hopes is that they will be able to find some of these elusive particles that help us to understand reality. Whether they find them or not, of course, we don't know. Whether the theory is right or not, we don't know. There are many alternate theories being presented. But one thing I am convinced of biblically, that if ever they come up with whatever it is that holds the universe together, it will have a name, and his name will be Jesus. Romans 1.17, "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." What I find personally so fascinating about science, and I've said this before, is that the deeper people dig into the reality of nature, the more they end up in the presence of God, from whom came and comes the energy to not only create this vast universe with its incredible complexity, but who also holds it together. Now this unified field theory I've known about for quite some time, what I haven't known about for very long is that in your body and my body there is also a substance that serves in a very similar fashion something that ties our bodies together. It's a thing called laminin, L-A-M-I-N-I-N, and I had never heard about this until I listened to a talk a while back by a fellow by the name of Louis Gigliot. Louis Gigliot is a pastor in the Atlanta, Georgia area and has been doing a lot of speaking to young adult conferences and has a very apt way of communicating the reality of God's love and power to his people. And just to give you a flavor of this and to explain the function and the nature of laminin, we've got about a seven minute video clip from a larger presentation that sometime in the future we're going to show to the whole church, a seven minute clip whereby he describes what laminin is and what it looks like and then I'll come back up and we'll pull this together if you'll pardon the pun and see how that sets the stage for thanking God in difficult and turbulent times. So take a look at this. And I'll tell you how you can know tonight that God will always hold you together no matter what. It's by looking a little deeper into the human body and it's a little protein molecule called laminin. That's about what I felt the first time I heard that. Long story short, the tour was winding down last time around. We were in Tyler, Texas. The night was over. A guy walks up to me. I wish I could tell you the whole story. It was so of God. Introduces himself to me. He says, "How are you doing? I just wanted to say hello." I said, "It's nice to meet you." He says, "You guys winding the tour down. Where are you going to go from here?" I said, "Well, I'm on my way back home to Atlanta, Georgia." He said, "Well, what's next for you?" I said, "I'm going to be preaching the next two Sundays for my pastor back in Atlanta." He said, "Oh, cool. What are you preaching on?" I said, "Well, the series is on the glory of God in the human body." He said, "That's really amazing. I'm a molecular biologist at the university down the road. Give me your talk." And I was like, "Oh, wow. I wasn't quite yet ready to unload the talk for a molecular biologist." So I kind of stumbled through what I had, and he's kind of being kind and gracious and like, "Uh-huh, that's good." And then he says, "Well, what's your big left hook? You got to have a left hook. A big finish, right?" I said, "I don't have a left hook yet." He said, "Oh, Louie. Oh, man. Your left hook is laminin." And I'm totally blank on laminin. He goes, "Louie, it's a cell adhesion molecule. Protein molecule? Do you know about proteins?" I'm like, "No." He said, "Louie, cells organize into certain molecular structures, and that determines what protein there are. There are between 10 and 60,000 proteins in the human body. We don't even know how many proteins are in the human body, but one of them is a cell adhesion molecule. It's organized into this certain structure, and that tells the cell what its job is in the body. And this one is a cell adhesion molecule." I'm like, "All right." He said, "No, Louie. It's like the rebar of the human body, the steel they put in the concrete when they lay the foundations of things. It's that stuff. It's holding your membranes together. It's the glue of the human body, Louie. It's laminin. You got to tell them about laminin." And I'm like, "I promise you, I'm going home and tell them about laminin, and I'm sure when I do, revival is going to sweep across the church and probably around the world when I tell them." He said, "No, no, no, no. You've got to see laminin." I'm like, "Okay. Let's see it." He said, "No, no, no. You need to go look it up online. You need to go Google laminin." I don't even know how to spell laminin. He takes his card out. He writes on the back, L-A-M-I-N-I-N. I'm like, "Okay. I cannot wait to get to my computer and get on Google, click on images, type in laminin, and I'm waiting, and these little thumbnails come up on the screen." And I'm like, "Wow. That's laminin, the cell adhesion molecule. Whoo!" I am so excited. I am beside myself. I cannot believe what I'm seeing. I love laminin. I'm so fired up. You should see laminin, I guess. That's the thing, right? Okay. Here is a scientific diagram of the laminin cell adhesion molecule that's holding your body together right now, okay? This is what I found right here. No, come on. That's crazy. That's just crazy. I just can't believe it. I emailed that guy back so fast, I'm like, "Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. What in the world?" He said, "Do you want to see an actual laminin molecule?" I'm like, "Oh, no, man. The diagram was cool for me. I'm happy with that. Don't bother sending anything else." He said, "Yes." He sends me this image, an electron microscopic image of an actual laminin protein molecule. It looks just like this. See how crazy is that? That the stuff that holds our bodies together, that's holding the lining of your organs together, holding your skin on, is in the perfect shape of the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Immediately, I'm thinking about the words of Paul in Colossians 1. You know this beautiful passage where Paul's talking about the supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of Christ. He says, "For by him," talking about Jesus Christ, "all things have been created, things in heaven and things on earth. All things were created by Jesus and for Jesus." But then the next verse goes on to say this. It's crazy. "And he," Jesus, "is before all things and in him," that is, in Jesus Christ, "all things hold together." It's right there. I'm like, "Of course they do. Of course they do. Everything holds together in Jesus Christ." And he goes on at the end of this paragraph and he just tells the story of grace. He says, "For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Christ and through Christ to reconcile to himself all things by making peace through his blood shed on a cross." So you're at the toughest place in your life. How can you know that God is going to hold you together and bring you through? You know because there is a cross standing over history and it is looming over this building tonight. It is the place where the star breather became the sin bearer. Where the universe maker became mankind's savior. And it is proof that God doesn't always change the circumstances. He did not change them for Jesus on that hillside outside Jerusalem. But the cross is also proof that God always has a purpose in the circumstances and that his purpose and his plan will prevail and will triumph through any circumstances in this world. That's Louis Giglio. You can Google Laminin yourself. I did. And what he says is true. That is what it looks like. And you can go in all kinds of directions with that obviously but the direction that he takes it is what I want to talk about for just a few moments because we live as I said earlier in a world that is shaking. It shakes because ultimately we were alienated from God. Sin has entered into the world. We reap what we sow and every so often the harvest comes dear. And part of the harvest is disintegration. Apart from a constant influx of life and energy all things in the universe wind down. And you don't have to be a particle physicist or a molecular biologist to know that. It's simply the reality of life. Don't look after your body. What happens? You get sick. Eventually you die. You don't look after your significant relationships. What happens? Misunderstandings enter in. Miscommunication becomes part and parcel of the picture and before you know it there's alienation and estrangement. You don't tend to your finances and before you know it your debt outweighs your net worth. And you can go on and on and on. And whenever you find yourself in the midst of that as sometimes we all do as you well know. Then there's the big question. How am I going to keep it together? And how can I avoid this kind of disintegration? I read somewhere not very long ago that the greatest angst, the greatest anxiety that people have is the sense of nothingness. The sense of I don't matter. I'm not valued. I'm not seen. I'm not heard. And while a lot of people think that dying without an eternity is to be preferred to the concept of an everlasting and an eternal hell. The reality is that the idea of ceasing to exist is incredibly anxiety producing in all of the human race. And that's why what Giglio says about the person of Jesus holding it all together is so important. Even as I'm convinced it's the presence and the power of Jesus that ties the electrons and the protons and the neutrons and the gluons and the bosons and the quarks and God knows whatever else there is all there together. And even as in his wisdom he's given us a molecular connective protein in the shape of the cross that holds us together on a cellular level. So the person of Jesus is also the person who holds us together in times of shaking and in times of challenge and times of difficulty. Now I don't profess to know what it is that you're going through or have gone through. I know a little bit of where I'm at and where I have gone through and where I find myself. And I can tell you when all has been said and done. It's God's grace in Jesus often mediated by his people who enables us to hold it together and to stand knowing that our God is faithful and he will not let us go. And so as we get ready this morning for our prayer of thanksgiving here's what I want us to do. I want us to do a little silent and quiet reflecting on where have the stresses been in your life in the last year. It may be financial. It may be emotional. It may be relational. Maybe you've lost half your life savings in the current downturn of the economic market. Maybe you wonder about the future. Maybe you're concerned about your children. Maybe you're concerned about your health. Maybe you're concerned about the day of tomorrow. And you say to yourself how can I keep it all together? And it preoccupies your thinking from early morning to late at night. In fact you have very little left over to give to anybody else because you're so preoccupied with the pockets and the places of pain in your own life. Ask the Lord just to help you focus on those spots and then ask him to show you how through it all he's been there helping you hold it together. Because you see, painful as some of those journeys are for all of us and difficult as some of those journeys are for all of us, the fact remains things could be a whole lot worse than what they are. I know that's often small consolation because we just feel our own pain and want our own pain to go away. But I think that one day when the Lord pulls back the curtain of our lives and when he shows us what's been going on behind the scenes, we will have discovered as in that footprints poem, when we most felt alone and when there was only a single track of footprints in the sand. It was then that he carried us and out of that let us give thanks for the times when money came in at the very last moment when we had no hope. Or the time when he enabled us in our marriage and in our relationship with our children to break through an impasse where we thought the impasse could never ever be resolved. Or those places deep down in our heart where we felt so abandoned and so lost and so alone and God gave us that moment of revelation, pulled back the veil and showed his glory and granted us that spirit of sonship, all of those we need to give thanks to God for again and again and again. Now I well recognize there are some of us here and life has been pretty peachy keen and you say I'm not aware of shaking moments in my life, in fact my life has been pretty good. Well all the more reason for giving thanks to God and all the more reason for inviting him to give the revelation of his Holy Spirit to show you those places where he has protected you, where he's placed his angels all around you. Who of us here knows how close any of us could have come to disintegration and destruction but for the intervention of God that you and I have never been allowed to see because it took place behind the scenes. Don't ever think that is just your own goodness, your own brilliance and your own competence that holds your life together because it doesn't. The forces of hell that are arrayed against the children of God, the power of sin and the power of darkness is far greater than anything that you or I can ever bring to the table, trust me. And in those moments the only one who can do it is Jesus who died on the cross to reconcile all things to God and all things to each other because in him the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. So we're going to spend a little time in prayer together and I'm going to lead you off and then I'm just going to invite you to talk to the Lord yourself about the things that we've been talking about. And let's ask him to stir up in our hearts the kind of thankfulness, the kind of thanksgiving that God says ought to be characteristic of the children of God not only in the good times but also in the bad times because God is faithful and he will not let us go. And one day we'll look back on all of that and we'll say it was good for me to have been afflicted because otherwise I would have never sought the Lord. So pray with me. Father in heaven, it's easy to be thankful when things go well and when life is unfolding the way that we think it ought to. And Lord for all those good things and all those good blessings that we so obviously experience we cannot but give you thanks this day. We live in a country where we have the freedom to do what we essentially want to do and the freedom to believe what we want to believe. We live in a country where as many other countries are affected and impacted by weather conditions so extreme that it is impossible for them to survive. Lord we have a climate that is moderate. And even when it rains too much or the sun shines too much the crops still grow and we still have food on the table and life is still good. And Lord we have family and we have friends and even the loneliest one of us is still part of community where once we open up our hearts there are others who can step into that. And Lord for all of that we give you thanks for health and strength, the ability to do our work, the ability to get up in the morning, the ability to have purpose and meaning and focus in life. What incredible gifts, what incredible blessings those are and how often we are ungrateful and unthankful. And Lord for that we ask you to forgive us and we pray that you will stir within our hearts that constant realization of how good you are and how faithful you are. But then Lord there are those places in our lives where we really shake, where fear overtakes us, where we worry about the future. We worry about our life savings, we worry about our relationships, we worry about our jobs, we worry about our marriages, we worry about our health, we worry about our children, we worry about the economic climate, we worry about politics, we worry about wars. We worry and worry and worry. And yet Father you tell us that in Christ all things hold together. And that when we are your children through faith in him we are grafted in the palm of your hand. And that we are like the apple of your eye. And so in these next few moments of prayer Lord we pray that you will help us to see those places where life has been shaking. And that in the midst of that shaking you have shown your favor and you have upheld us just short of the cliff of destruction. And Lord instead of focusing on all the pain and the negatives and the disappointments of life, help our hearts to overflow with gratitude and thanksgiving. Because we are still here and we are still sane and you are helping us to hold our lives together. Because Jesus is the ultimate laminin, the ultimate gluon, the ultimate boson, the ultimate photon. All things are created by him and in him all things hold together. And so Lord we are going to talk to you now just quietly in our own hearts for a few moments. And Lord some of us we just have nothing but good to say and we pray that those prayers of thanksgiving may also arise to you for your glory. So take a moment now and just talk in your heart to the Lord. Thank you so much Father that by your grace we can give you thanks. We can give you thanks when peace flows like a river and we can give you thanks when sorrows like sea billows roll. Because when all has been said and done, it is well, it is well with our souls. As we receive this morning our thanksgiving offering, which is for our budget booster, it is helpful to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, who said, "Give and it will be given to you, full measure, pressed down, shaken together, for in the measure that you give, you will also receive." And our Christian stewardship is never just about giving our hard-earned time, talent, or treasure, because God needs it, it is always a declaration of faith. That in a world where there is so much shortage and so much heartache, we have a Father who is in heaven, who has committed himself to meeting all of our needs, according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus. So, let us put our faith to work as we make this morning our thanksgiving offering to God. And all of you is more than enough for all of me. For every thirst and every need, you satisfy me with your love. And all I have in you is more than enough. You are my supply, my breath of life, still more awesome than I know. You are my reward, worth living for, still more awesome than I know. And all of you is more than enough for all of me. For every thirst and every need, you satisfy me with your love.
